Some things in life defy explanation: when a parent exists solely to protect their child. Nothing tops that. This film leans fully into that question—how far would you go for the person you love most? Watching it, I kept thinking: I would probably do the same.
The plot is straightforward. A father cannot afford his son’s life-saving surgery, and the system essentially says, “Sorry.” Instead of accepting that answer, he refuses to leave until the doctors operate. That is the moment when the film becomes truly human. It is no longer about healthcare policy; it is about a parent who will not let go.
I would gladly show this film to people who think “everything is better elsewhere.” Other countries do not coddle you either. Without money you hit walls everywhere. Hungary’s healthcare has problems, yes, and you cannot directly compare systems, but it is useful to remember that bureaucratic obstacles exist worldwide.
The performances are excellent. Denzel Washington once again embodies a father who will sacrifice anything if it means his child lives. The supporting cast holds up just as well. It is an older movie, yet the issue has not vanished: without resources you are vulnerable. In quieter times we forget to prepare for the worst.
There is also a strong spiritual thread. I believe God walks with us, and sometimes the help we need arrives exactly when we require it. The film preserves that hope.
It raised tough questions for me:
- Would you do what he did for your child—even contemplate suicide—just to give them a heart?
- If everyone knows a system is broken, why does no one fix it? (Drawing a parallel to Hungary is easy; everyone sees what is wrong, but the “brain-dead puppets” refuse to move.)
My throat tightened more than once. The film shows its age, but the message remains sharp. I rate it 8 out of 10, and I sincerely hope no one ever has to live through this for real.
